Finally Some Good Fucking Food pt.14
aka 4/20 and Dessert Lasagne
Bonjour my little donuts and welcome to another week of FSGF! As some of you may have seen, I have finally started an Instagram for this account where I’ll be sharing photos and relevant stories and such, which you can follow here.
My sister has been telling me about this whole ‘positive manifestation’ malarkey where you believe in the good things you want and by sending that positive energy into the world, it will return back to you. I’m unsure of the exact science, but going on what we do know about women, working class people and other marginalised groups being likely to undersell themselves, it does feel like a good exercise to indulge in; why shouldn’t we act like we’re entitled to something if that’s what rich white men get to do all the time?
At the moment these positive vibes are working for me as now the charity shops are open; it seems every time I go in there to get rid of stuff I also find great new things. This week’s sterling find was a second hand copy of Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi’s Jerusalem. As a vegetarian, I like a lot of Arabic and North African cuisine, so I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in. I’ll be keeping my eye out for future cookbook finds, and currently trying to manifest a secondhand copy of Salt Fat Acid Heat.
But now, onto the show:
Blossom Street Social White Wine of the Day
I went out last Saturday and it is the closest I felt to normal in a long time. I got dressed up! I spoke to people in person! I drank white wine! As my first white wine outside the house, this was a delicious one to start with and I wish I had made a note of what it actually was called. Yes, I had to drink it with gloves on, but it didn’t take away from the experience that I was on a night out! drinking!
Popolinos Pizza
Obviously following from getting somewhat drunk, it had to be followed up by drunk food. God bless Joe and Rhiannon, who showed us Popolinos, a place that does exactly the kind of takeaway pizza you want (thick, fluffy and a fairly equal amount of tomato to cheese) and the best part is that it is only a five minute walk from my house. Will definitely be a new go-to, even when I just fancy a pizza for those hangover—watching-stuff-in-bed days.
Asda Sweet Potato Lasagne
As I spent a significant amount of my teens eating ready meals, I’ve spent most of my twenties avoiding them. However with my desire to cook waning at the moment, I have been occasionally buying the odd ready meal to keep in the freezer and decided to take a punt on Asda’s vegetarian range. I did top with extra cheese, but this hits the spot of that easy, comforting meal with a good ratio of filling to béchamel (which in my opinion is more white sauce, the better)
Marks and Spencer’s Tiramisu for Six
Someone described tiramisu to me this week as dessert lasagne and I’ve never heard a more accurate description. Tiramisu became one of my favourite desserts over the pandemic and I am eagerly anticipating finding a good restaurant version. (Any tips welcome). In the meantime however, I did buy Marks and Spencer tiramisu for six because it was only double the price of tiramisu for one and I love it enough that I am confident I can finish it. Also it should be said, tiramisu is a fantastic drunk snack.
Siop Shop CBD Mango Meringue Donut
Since I can’t say I’ve tried weed (at least not in a public newsletter),
I have also not tried CBD, the legal ingredient that is all the rage in health food shops at the moment. I’m unsure exactly what it’s meant to do, but in celebration of 4/20 my faves at Siop Shop did a collab with Dank Bakery UK to make a CBD infused Mango curd for this Mango Meringue donut. I was curious so I bought one.
If I’m honest, the donut itself was pretty good, the meringue topping was excellent and the inside tasted like a Solero, but I didn’t feel anything. Well, I did feel a little hyper briefly but that’s probably due to the sugar, and then I went for a big nap. It usually happens with carbs, but also according to Harvard Medical School, CBD ‘may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep’.
I am still unsure of the effects of CBD and whether it has any, but the donut was nice!
Reese’s Peanut Butter Chips
I used these chips this week to make a peanut butter version of the hummingbird brownies I usually make and honestly this are so good I could snack on them by themselves. Also excellent in the brownies though, just sub out the milk chocolate chips with these ones
Taco Masala aka More Wolf at the Door
My mum visited this week and as I showed her around for lunch, she immediately liked the sound of £1 taco and bao, so we ended up back at Wolf at the Door. She really liked both the Char Sui Mushroom and Nacho Tacos, while I tried the Taco Masala this time and will definitely be adding it to my regular order. Plus, the food arrived much quicker so as I suspected last time’s delay was due to the backlog! Excellent service as always!
Palm Springs
Admittedly not food, just a great movie.
Aims:
cereal milk ice cream
i believe I’ve mentioned before what a fan I am on Milk Bar and Christina Tosi, but very sad I won’t be able to try any of their famous cereal milk products for a long while. I am very excited however to see that Gooeyco at Ducie Street Warehouse are now offering Cereal Milk soft serve ice cream so am planning an expedition to finally give it a go.
chocolate tahini
Ash Sarkar mentioned this week about trying chocolate tahini which I am very intrigued about, and I know Nigella has a chocolate tahini banana bread recipe so I’m definitely going to do some investigating. Apparently according to Nigella the best Tahini is the more liquid kind you get in Middle Eastern supermarkets, so it gives me an excuse to check out some new places in Manchester too!
truffle salad?
My beloved Marks and Spencer truffle oil has returned after at least a three month absence and as we reach the warmer climes, I need to find more cold recipes; if anyone knows a good salad recipe that uses truffle oil, do let me know.
That’s all for this week ) but as always do get in touch! Comments warm my heart, so I’d love to hear your recipes, ideas or just a nice meal you had.
