Hey guys, welcome back! I’m still in assignment hell (one down, two to go, kill me now) and I think I am forcibly blanking out the majority of my days so whilst my list isn’t particularly detailed or fancy this week, I’ve decided to include a bonus list inspired by this tweet by Lauren Pattinson:

My list is just food I thought as a WC child was posh but honestly can’t say if it is or isn’t because who knows anymore??
Food I liked this week:
Hellmanns Garlic and Herb Sauce
This is a simple one but I love the little garlic sauces that come with takeaway pizza and will normally order several spare to jazz up my freezer deep pan; this is great because it tastes exactly the same, and in a handy bottle which can be used for burgers, chips, sandwiches etc etc.
Grilled Cheese Made with Brioche Buns
One of my guilty pleasures is the incredibly overpriced Five Guys grilled cheese sandwich. It always struck me as interesting that they used an inside out burger bun (slice it, butter the inside, then put the cheese on the shiny top and bottom before frying on the grill as a whole.) This week I had picked up for brioche buns and figured I’d give it a go and you know what? It really is superior. And a fraction of the price.(You can use basically any pre sliced burger bun for this if you want.)
An Actually Ripe Avocado (as a side to fast food)
In a surprising turn of events I actually managed to get some avocadoes that were ripe on purchase.
Firstly, it was really nice just not having to wait two weeks to eat them, but also I tend to have it as a side to pretty much anything, especially my more unhealthy choices like the aforementioned grilled cheese as well as reheated leftover takeaway pizza. This is probably the closest I’ll come to a balanced diet.
Jam Shed Shiraz
I’m not a wine connoisseur in the slightest and my main choice tends to be Yellow Tail Jammy Red Roo, a very fruity, sweet red wine which is surprisingly good chilled as well as room temperature (also good in a sangria). It’s a good wine to get into if you’re not much for red wine in general, and after me and my mum spent the first lockdown drinking a lot of it, Jam Shed is a similar yet marginally less sweet and stronger version for those of you needing a bit more punch to your red.
Tomato and Cheese Pasta Bake (with added leek and courgettes)
I have a soft spot for just a classic jar sauce tomato pasta bake (particularly if you can find a good veggie sausage to cut up and throw in) and while I didn’t make this one, if anything, me not being involved in the making only improved the flavour (also the leeks). Also, the cheese top was dark brown and crispy which is just about how I like it. I wish you could make the crunchy top a snack, like a warm gourmet crisp.
Aims for the future:
try to finish all my Christmas chocolate
look up recipes for soda stream
My flatmate has ordered one and I am very excited to see what things I can make fizzy, especially as I want to recreate this amazing fizzy strawberry yogurt drink I had at Bao. (I know it sounds disgusting but it was weirdly refreshing).
Something from the Milk Bar cookbook
My boyfriend bought me possibly one of my favourite presents ever, which is the Milk Bar cookbook as he knows how much I love the episode of Chef’s Table with Christina Tosi. After some of the men you see on that show, it was a delight to see such a normal woman with a sweet tooth cooking with everyday ingredients! Anyway, I am desperate to try her cereal milk panna cotta but depending on access and time to vegetarian gelatine I may try something simpler first. Also I want to become one of those people who delivers dessert to their friends in lockdown.
Bonus content: Things I thought were posh but idk
undiluted orange juice
anything with prawns
mayonnaise
actually any sauce that wasn’t ketchup or brown sauce
oven chips, or more so those roast potatoes you can get in the freezer section
buying Ben and Jerrys or Haagen Daz full price
buying cinema popcorn
slushies
most crisps that weren’t Walkers, Mccoys, Hula Hoops or Pom Bears
hummus (although I did not know hummus was a thing until I went to university. It is now one of my favourite drunk snacks, best consumed with toasted pittas and by the tubful.)
really, anything served with a dip (tortilla chips with fresh sour cream and chive dip is still one of my favourite party foods as an adult)
buying a salad for lunch
the concept of takeaway (unless it was chips or a pasty)
getting a cheese board instead of dessert
getting a starter
Pizza Express, Zizzi or Prezzo
really, just the concept of going to any restaurant, especially if it’s not for a birthday
That’s it for this week (and next as I’ll be on a temporary hiatus as I start classes again) but as always I am always open for recipe suggestions or product recommendations!
